The Newport Platform of Non-Volatile Memory Express® (NVMe®) Solid-State Drives (SSDs), an innovative line of SSDs from NGD Systems, redefine what performance means for an SSD. Instead of solely focusing on increasing read/write IOPS and bandwidth, the Newport Platform provides optimum Quality of Service (QoS), as well as in-situ processing with computational resources inside of the SSD. This allows solution architects to focus on identifying the right data and/or results to provide to the application, rather than filling up the PCI Express® (PCIe®) bus with data, most of which is often not even needed by the application. The first of the Newport Platform SSDs is the 16TB U.2 Drive that does all of this while consuming an average of 10 watts of power. The result is lightning-fast application performance and smaller application footprints, which means significantly reduced capital expenses (CapEx) and operational expenses (OpEx).

The Newport U.2 SSD is based on the NGD Systems Newport Computational Storage Controller (ASIC), the industry’s first SSD controller ASIC to be released on an 14 nanometer (nm) process node. The Newport Computational Storage Controller enables advanced SSDs from NGD Systems that have:

  • Up to 16 flash channels to provide maximum storage capacity and better QoS
  • In-Situ processing capability, with a multi-core ARM® processor and dedicated acceleration hardware for parallel and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) applications
  • Support for the PCIe Gen 3 x4, NVMe 1.3 specification interface
